Real Good Eats
Decisively ending the badminton match of "what do you want to eat" "I dunno, what do you want to eat".

Penisula Malaysian Cuisine -
2608 Nicollet Ave. S. - Minneapolis
Report this commentMulticultural influences and perfect cooking make for delicious meals here, no matter what you order. You're bound to develop a craving for a couple favorites--how fortunate, then, that the menu is reasonably priced.

Puerta Azul -
1811 Selby Ave . - St. Paul (Mirriam Park)
Report this commentTasteful interior deco marries well with flavorful, authentic cuisine. Rarely have plantains and pork sat so happily together. Be prepared to shell out for it, though, if you manage to negotiate their unaccomodating business hours.

Mandarin Kitchen -
8766 S. Lyndale Ave. - Minneapolis
Report this commentWhen an ethnic restaurant's clientele matches the cuisine they tout, you're on the right track. Bring a dozen of your friends for some lively, delicious dim sum on the weekend, or call ahead for take-out while driving around with your partner.

Red Dragon Restaurant -
2116 Lyndale Ave. S. - Minneapolis (Uptown)
Report this commentYour friends might think the place beneath them, but the food is good when you're hungry and the fishbowl drinks are precisely what the doctor ordered. Reserve a few tables for your birthday party and you're sure to come away with a couple good stories to recount for years hence. Service is hit-or-miss: you could get an affable, attentive guy or a cute, surly girl prone to sharing her rotten day with you.

Psycho Suzi's Motor Lounge -
2519 Marshall St. N.E. - Minneapolis (Northeast)
Report this commentGreat fun, simple fare, with sufficient service. The drinks are colorful and intriguing; two or three will do the job. How many other places do you know list Tater Tots in their appetizers? And your friends will cozy up to these and begin reminiscing over childhood escapades, assisted by the drinks: this place does almost all the work of socializing for you.

The New Louisiana Cafe -
613 Selby Ave. - St. Paul (Cathedral Hill)
Report this commentGreat place for a large breakfast or lunch. You'll think it's pricey until you bring home leftovers for two more meals. The cooking's perfectly fine, being an American spin on whatever it touches. It's a diner at heart, just nicer-looking and larger.

Meritage -
410 St. Peter St. - St. Paul (Downtown)
Report this commentEverything here is done as best it can be done. The text of the menu itself is charming and a delight to study. Every dish is exquisite (if not, it will be apologetically returned to the kitchen for one that is) and the service is exemplary. Natty waitstaff know all about what they're serving and can answer any question. Every restaurant in the Twin Cities needs to take a busman's holiday here for serious education on the spirit of service.

Moscow on the Hill -
371 Selby Ave. - St. Paul (Cathedral Hill)
Report this comment"Heroes are bold with food." If you can agree with that, this is one place to test that. Ask what the house likes, share a variety platter with friends, and treat yourself to a flight of vodka. This is an excellent retreat in a lovely neighborhood, can't go wrong.

Ted Cook's 19th Hole BBQ -
2814 E. 38th St. - Minneapolis (Powderhorn)
Report this commentGo in, order your ribs and sauce, go home, and eat your way to heaven. This is the most delicious mess you're going to make in a long time. The ribs are tender and the sauces are savory and spicy, there is nothing wrong with these. These guys know what they're doing.

Shorty & Wags -
3753 Nicollet Ave. - Minneapolis
Report this commentYou've driven by it hundreds of times, noticed the simple sign with the two chickens. It's a landmark and it's entirely worth your while to try anything on the menu. This isn't haute cuisine by a long shot, but it is delicious and straightforward. The hush puppies are a treat all on their own, and the catfish fingers are particularly well done.
