Sometimes you see the strangest things in Minneapolis' parks. Sometimes, those strange things turn out to be some of the best entertainment in town.
The Twin Cities' newest theater company, Strange Capers, is taking over Boom Island Park in Minneapolis this summer, showcasing outdoor theater starring some of the biggest names in local theater. Metromix caught up with the troupe during rehearsals. Actor Randy Reyes is the company's artistic director and a founding member. Reyes sees this theater company as a great addition to the local theater scene.
"Minneapolis has such a great theater reputation," says Reyes. "But there isn't a whole lot of outdoor theater, and with our short summer and our awful winters, it just makes perfect sense."
Strange Capers' first show is Shakespeare's "As You Like It" with a modern twist. The show won't feature puffy pants or solemn soliliquies, rather will incorporate the modern surroundings of Boom Island Park, as well as the modern dress of the actors. The show will be staged in two areas in the park, the first courts scenes will happen along the pathway next to the Mississippi River; the second scene takes place in a grassy, wooded area of the park.
"We're adapting the show to reflect the surroundings," says Reyes. "If a plane flies over, we aknowledge it. When people run or bike by, it's like they're animals in the forest. It's a fun, inventive way to look at Shakespeare and we're really excited about it."
Strange Capers' performances will be Saturdays and Sundays through the end of August.
