Mancini’s Char House and Lounge is a St. Paul institution, family run since 1948. It’s as well known for its New York strip steak as it is for its décor, a mix between a 1950s Vegas casino (pull-tabs are for sale) and a red cave (red booths upon red booths and gold track lighting). On Karaoke Tuesday at Mancini’s, regulars belt out Frank Sinatra and Linda Ronstadt songs. And it’s the kind of place where you can imagine Ol’ Blue Eyes holding fort in one of the corner booths, Ronstadt lounging at the bar, both of them listening to the rotating live band (Wednesday through Saturday).

I turned 22 this year, but last year was the year I learned where to go, and where NOT to go.
