The South Minneapolis corner of 42nd and Cedar has a new kid in town—Stabby’s Café. Owner Mike Staab (Stabby was a college nickname) opened the casual café just a month ago, which serves breakfast and lunch only.

The no-frills diner, with black and white wall tile and red, vinyl chairs hints toward retro, but comes just shy of this presumed goal. And the menu, with omelets, biscuits and gravy, hot dogs and burgers, could be the listing the offerings of any small town diner. We tried both the breakfast and lunch overall thought the food was good but in need of some flavor boosts.

Kristin’s Revenge vegetarian omelet, although not quite “gourmet” as the menu suggests, is an extra-large serving of thin golden egg stretched to just barely contain the veggie sausage, tomato, onion, mushrooms and cheese. It is served with toast and a side of “spicy” hashbrowns—well-seasoned but not particularly spicy.

The biscuits and gravy, listed as an owner’s favorite, are a healthy serving of sausage gravy over two open-faced biscuits. Creamy and filling, but the flavor was not particularly memorable. Also of note is the variety of pancakes on the menu, including the gingerbread pancake, which was fluffy and not overly sweet (before the syrup, of course).

Two lunch items that jumped off the menu were the “Oh, Angelo” Coney dog and the Stabby’s Halo Dome burger. The Angelo all beef dog is made Flint, Michigan style (Staab’s native city) with Coney sauce (a dry-style, beanless chili) and raw onions. For $4.50 the lunch was filling, but the chili was unfortunately more dried-out than dry-style.

Stabby’s Halo Dome burger, a third pound burger with onion, pickle, green olive and American cheese was juicy and quite good. The green olives and pickle added a saltiness that negated the need for further condiments on this towering burger.

More lunch menu options include the big BLT with thick-cut bacon and chipotle mayo and the Polish link topped with spiced sauerkraut. But, no jucy lucy as the menu clearly states “We don’t have them here”, directing diners to nearby Matt’s Bar.
