Finally, the Super Bowl halftime show got some star power and aimed itself at a demographic under 65, and what happened? It didn’t even air on live TV. Instead of seeing NKOTB do “Step by Step” and “This One’s for the Children” (accompanied by 3,500 local kids wielding foam guitars), ABC preempted the spectacle with news coverage of Operation Desert Storm. An edited version of the proceedings aired after the game, but all anyone remembers is Whitney Houston’s stunning pregame national anthem.
