Go Negativ Zine Release
Friday, July 3rd
Of all the underground cultural traditions threatened with extinction by the current economic swoon, do-it-yourself ‘zine publishing ranks somewhere near the top. If legitimate newspapers can't find ways to stay in business, what hope is there for the safety-pinned punk rocker whose "publishing house" is an open all night Kinkos? Thankfully a few proud Twin Citians refuse to give up the DIY fight; the homegrown literary/arts 'zine Go Negativ celebrates the release of its second issue tonight at the 7th St. Entry and has recruited an enviably deep roster of local musical talent to help hype its arrival. The neo-psychedelia of Magic Castles and the Eastern European inflected folk dirge dreaminess of Dark Dark Dark headline a lineup rounded out by Louisiana's Hurray for the Riff Raff and the always intriguing outré instrumental improvisations of Paul Metzger. The all over the map mash up on display should make for a night of sublimely weird music and its purpose extends beyond merely touting homemade media, all proceeds from the cover charge will be donated to Fremont Community Clinics. (9 p.m., $7, 18+)
