Under the radar #6
Savath & Savalas, "Golden Pollen" (Anti-)

Who: The mellower, more organic alias of Guillermo Scott Herren, as opposed to the glitchy art-hop he produces as Prefuse 73.

What: Ethereal and ambient soundscapes laden with exotic instrumentation and guest vocals from the likes of Jose Gonzalez and Mia Doi Todd. Quiet, understated and elegant, these lushly produced compositions are downright hypnotic.

Made for: Impressing a hot date with your romantic but still hipster-cool musical selections. Herren's rabid cult of followers. Proving to your parents that not everything you listen to is scary and/or pornographic.

Gabby Glaser, "Gimme Splash" (Latchkey Recordings)

Who: The raven-haired beauty who used to play guitar in perpetually underappreciated mid-'90s NYC boho babe band Luscious Jackson goes solo.

What: A stylistically diverse display of funky downtown sensibilities, ranging from the groovy '70s love buzz of "Spirit of Long Island" to the Breeders-esque alt-rock of "Balls Out." "Darling" is a sunny slice of jazzy indie pop invocative of early Luscious Jackson.

Made for: 1990s alterna-teens grown up and longing for a taste of the good ol' days. Lo-fi freaks who like a shot of pop with their garage rock. Luscious Jackson diehards continuing to keep the faith.

Pelican, "City of Echoes" (Hydra Head)

Who: Arty post-metal four-piece from Chicago, currently based in Los Angeles.

What: Massive slabs of big rock riffs heavy on atmosphere and light on vocals (as in there are none). Peppered with acoustic guitars, pianos and only one song over seven minutes, the band calls it their "pop" album.

Made for: Intellectual post-metalheads already listening to the likes of Isis and Red Sparowes. Sound obsessives wondering what Tortoise would sound like as head-bangers. The snotty kids that hang out in front of your local 7-11.
