The Musée du Louvre in Paris has one of the premiere collections of art in the world and now you can experience a taste right here in the Twin Cities. The Minneapolis Institute of Arts is hosting The Louvre and the Masterpiece through early January. This amazing sample of 62 works of art draws from every collection area at the Louvre. The featured paintings, sculpture and drawings will explore the themes of the exhibit which include the changing definition of a masterpiece throughout history as well as the evolution of taste.
This exhibit will even feature a famous forgery—The Blue Head. This glass sculpture was once thought to be an ancient Egyptian masterpiece, but in 2001 it was discovered to be a forgery. Other real masterpieces that will be featured include Johannes Vermeer’s, The Astronomer (which has never been seen in North America), an oil sketch by Leonardo da Vinci, and a life-size bronze statue called The Lion and the Serpent that was once displayed in the Tuileries Gardens in Paris.
The museum is planning on many events and lectures surrounding the exhibit including a special Third Thursday: Ooh La Louvre on November 19.
