With a sure shot location in Uptown and a very happening new spot in Northeast, the Bulldog brand has done well for itself by providing customers with a long list of beers and several kinds of creative burgers.
So we immediately have to ask: does the same success of the Uptown and Northeast locations carry over to the new Bulldog Lowertown?
If you're a fan of the Minneapolis Bulldogs, then you're also going to like the new St. Paul spot. The restaurant occupies a corner in downtown by Mears Park, with a 22' shuffle board along the near wall of windows and several spacious booths along the far wall. The new location also features several flat screen TVs, just in case you want to watch sports, "Jeopardy!" and a cooking show all at the same time.
The menu is more of the same American food—there's hot dogs, pretzels, tater tots and hand-packed burgers (the cooks make sure they make the meat with the right firmness for maximum juiciness). We thought about getting the Lowertown burger, which has sundried tomato, basil, black pepper and special seasoning (representing the colors of the Minnesota Wild, very clever), but $11 was a bit too "aggressively priced." Instead, we went with the Buffalo Bison burger, which was full of flavor and moist, even with the drier bison meat, and only ran $8.50.
We also took a look at the pretzel and the nachos, but neither of those apps were as appealing as the tots, and it was really our bad for even straying from the tater tot choices on the menu (there a several varieties, including garlic, chipotle and even cajun).
Let's move on to the beer. We like a place with a good brew selection, so the newest Bulldog location passes with flying colors. There's 100 different beers to choose from, and they also offer flights of five or six samples if you can't choose. Flights also help out in making a really mixed and mashed happy hour. Go with a flight of beers and add on two plates of 1/2 priced tater tots, and you've got a solid meal of bar food and exotic beers for a really reasonable price.
